I'm hoping to start commuting into work by bike again, from my apartment just near Gladstone and Bronson to my work which is in Kanata, just near the Home Depot. I'm looking for ways to avoid biking on busier streets like Carling and Richmond. I find my body really doesn't like vehicle exhaust, if I can avoid some traffic that would be really good. Once the paths clear, I'm going to probably take the Ottawa river bike path almost all the way in, but for now I've got to find another route. Here are two I've come up with...

1 (split into two parts to cross over the Kanata pedestrian foot bridge)

2 down richmond - not so hot.. :P

Ps: my work has turned our gym into a pc server room and now we can't use the showers because of fears of humidity. Sigh. Lame!

That's because no matter how crappy the working conditions are people will keep working, machines on the other hand won't.

Richard - woah - that's deep!

bobbotron - take Gladstone, jump over to Tyndall to get to Holland and then follow Byron out to Carling/Woodroffe. Follow Richmond Rd and then Carling (I know, but unless the paths are clear, there's no other decent direct route other than the maze of neighborhood streets adjacent to Carling) out to Corkstown Rd (accessible off of Holly Acres Rd near Andrew Haydon Park). Take Corkstown out to March Rd. to Campeau to the pedestrian overpass and then Katimavik to Terry Fox.

Once the bike paths are clear, you can take the Ottawa River bike path right from Lebreton Flats out to Corkstown Road.

Good luck!

Hope this link works....Route Map

I use to ride from around Billings to Kanata every day, even in the winter.
Use to ride down riverside
to baseline
to richmond
to moodie
to Timm road
to Katimavik
to around the corel center (previously to march to high tech park near Legget some years back).

baseline gets pretty thin (esp with snow). Not much room until you get to Woodroffe.
richmond was alright
moodie was alright
timm as excellent
Katimavik is a bit thin at times.

Always against traffic in the morning and at night (except for the good old hay days of the Nortel high tech boom. Generated a lot of traffic on baseline around Merivale area).
In the winter I would bike it in the dark. Did that for about 4 years or so.
Got hit once when they were doing construction of the new Loblaws (and area) around Woodroffe. The place was a maze of a mess. (other time was up in the gatineaus as some idiot of a punk U turned into me.)
Other than that, low middle finger count on that route provided (just a couple of times did I have to give the finger to azzhole drivers etc...).

enjoy.

Actually you can take the pathways all the way to March Road and go under it then go down to Village Green and follow the sidestreets to the Queensway overpass, Just keep going on the other side of Corkstown and continue on the paved path till it goes under the rail line near the Driving Range, and up to March Road on new pavement.

That's definitely what I'm planning on doing when the snow melts. I used to take that path to Shirlys bay when I worked there, it's such a nice ride!

was on one of the bike paths last night along the river (checking out the snow depth). It's gonna be a looonnng while. Damn snow is deep. Sunk about 2 feet in some spots.
Need a good week of rain.
Can just imagine how long it is going to take for all that snow to melt up in the gatineaus (as layers upon layers have been packed down).
Damn snow.

My GF and I tested the ride in yesterday. I was on my fix, she was on her long haul trucker. It's a pretty good ride! Some parts were great - the ride along the 417, Byron and the side streets. Some not so great - Carling Ave and riding through Kanata (riding along Campeau drive feels like you're riding through Pleasantville.) :P

That's a long commute! The ride back was nutty, there was some serious headwind to contend with.
