Well I am heading out this afternoon to map the Bruce Pit trails. Looked at the NCC map - two loops, one pathway, one trail - should be pretty simple.

But I know better - there is a lot more in there - got a new system to try for keeping track of intersections and trying to get all the intersecting trails using a new waypoint designation.

Probably going to leave the going through the gully and getting lost by the highway till the last mapping trip.

Well that was interesting. Marked 36 waypoints (intersections) in under 6 km and probably did less than half the area of trails. There seems to be even more than I expected and that doesn't count the trails I turned back on because they had become too overgrown. This is going to take a few mapping sessions and quite a bit of track and map editing.

This should prove to be a fun place to tool around in though. Lots of flowy trails, plus some tighter singletrack, not counting the stuff that's unrideable without massive bush and brush pruning. Nothing too technical except the suicide slopes down to the creek/ditch - one fortunately marked with a red flag.

Great work Richard. Rode there for the first time about a month ago and found quite an interesting web of trails.

Edited tracks from first mapping session. Much more to do.

I have always avoided this area because the Bruce Pit off-leash dog designation ( I have enough off-leash run-ins on the 24/25/RollerCoaster trails ) This being said, I really have no idea what the boudaries are for the frolicking packs of Rottweilers ( poodles, etc ). Are off-leash dogs allowed on trail 29 ?

The dogs are not near most of the trail. Last year I rode through the free run area and not a single dog chased after me. I think they are too busy playing with each other. That being said if a dog is chasing me I usually just stop, take my gloves off and and pet it, then I have a friend for life.

I rode over from P11 yesterday to check out these trails - no dog issues whatsoever. I quite enjoyed the loop on the southwest corner. Also checked out a trail going towards the railroad tracks north of the pit - a couple or veggie tunnels to plow through, but some decent stuff in there too.

New trails, whether they're simple or technical, are always fun, in the "exploration" sense, - and depending on how familiar you are with your "regular" routes ( man there are some trails, I think I could ride my my eyes closed ) unfamiliar twists, turns, logs, etc certainly keep your brain on it's toes ( especially with some speed )

Thanks for bringing this loop to our attention Richard. This certainly wouldn't be a "destination" ride for me, but to mix it in with my regular Stoney Swamp rides will be refreshing.

well i went out yesterday afternoon and tracked some more trails and waypoints - lots of intersecting trails near the dog park area - lots of dogs, not a single one chased me - so its onto editing the map.

however no more mapping for another 6-8 weeks because i'm off my bike due to a broken arm just below my shoulder that happened on a greenbelt ride last night.

Yikes, Richard, that's too bad. I would totally devasted to be out the game for the summer riding season.

For anybody else riding the 28/29 trails, I lost a pair of sunglass clip-ons somewhere out there this last Monday. If anybody sees them please pick them up and let me know !

Thanks !

This is the interim result of two mapping sessions. Going to be awhile before this is finished. Green track is paved or gravel paths and blue are dirt trails in the bush or in the dog free area. Blue dots are intersections where all intersecting trails have not been mapped yet.

Are these trails any fun to someone that enjoys challenging rides?
I live right next to the Kanata Lakes trails and was wondering if it was worth the drive.
I went there a lot time ago when I had my dog but never noticed anything interesting enough to ride.

Thanks.
